SPEAKING CONTEST

Cardiff’s Lord Mayor Adrian Robson will host a public speaking contest open to people living or working in Cardiff. The aim is to strengthen spoken communication and to engage in friendly competition. The final will take place on the evening of Tuesday 14th April 2026 at Cardiff Castle. Entrants should be aged 18 years and over.

formal experience of public speaking you are encouraged to apply. The only entry requirement is that you live or work in Cardiff.

 

The subject of each speech should relate to any aspect of Cardiff, for example: ‘Cardiff-2050’ or ‘My childhood in Cardiff’; or ‘Cardiff and the Arts’: or ‘Rhiwbina in the 1950s’; or The Birth of Rugby in Cardiff’; or even ‘If I was Lord Mayor’.

 

Speeches should be 5 minutes and each speech will be assessed on the basis of 50% for content (what is said) and 50% for presentation (how it is said).

The Lord Mayor’s Trophy will be presented to the successful speakers. Judges will be provided by the Cardiff Speakers Club and the Cardiff North Speakers Club; members or past members of those organisations are therefore not eligible to compete.


Lord Mayor Adrian Robson stated “I am delighted to host this speaking competition. Public speaking is an important skill and this contest gives Cardiffians the chance to improve their speaking, overcome nerves, and speak about an issue relating to Cardiff that they care passionately about in a competitive but friendly environment”.
